(NaturalNews) The skeletons just keep on coming out of the closet for pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson (J&J), which is currently being sued by tens of thousands of hip replacement patients for knowingly selling a faulty hip implant device that generates loose metal shards and poisons patients’ bloodstreams. According to recently-uncovered internal documents, J&J knew about the defective device for many years, but continued to deceptively market it across the globe as safe and effective.

As reported by The New York Times (NYT), the device in question, known as an Articular Surface Replacement (ASR), was first introduced back in the early 2000s as an alternative to traditional hip implant devices. Its design was supposed to overcome deficiencies inherent in previous models that were made from metal and plastic parts. But a major design flaw in the ASR caused the device’s supposedly innovative ball mechanism to grind against the inside cup, which in turn caused it to release metallic debris inside the bodies of many patients who received the implant.

Just a few years after its release by J&J’s DePuy Orthopaedics unit, internal tests conducted by company engineers revealed that the device was a complete failure, and that it was unsuitable for continued use. But rather than address the issue and recall the device, J&J continued to market the faulty ASR to surgeons across the country for at least another three years, even as thousands of these same physicians were rejecting the device in favor of safer and more durable alternatives.

“The ASR represents one of the biggest medical device failures in recent decades,” writes Barry Meier for NYT about the fiasco. “According to DePuy’s internal estimates, it is projected to fail within five years in about 40 percent of patients who received one. That is eight times the failure rate of most orthopedic implants.”

J&J eventually issued a recall on the ASR in 2010, but nearly 100,000 patients worldwide had already received the device, and many of these patients are now suing the company for fraud. J&J also failed to admit there was anything wrong with the device during the recall, insisting instead that “poor sales” were responsible for its discontinuation. However, internal records have now revealed that DePuy executives, including company president Andrew Ekdahl, were fully aware of the dangers associated with the ASR and yet did nothing about them.

Patients injured as a result of the faulty implant are being represented by the national law firm Parker Walchman LLP. Both the standard ASR and the resurfacing ASR manufactured by J&J DePuy are included in the lawsuit.

(NaturalNews) Younger women who eat more strawberries and blueberries may reduce their heart attack risk by one-third, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom, and published in the journal Circulation.

“Blueberries and strawberries can easily be incorporated into what women eat every week,” senior author Eric Rimm said. “This simple dietary change could have a significant impact on prevention efforts.”

In part because the risk of heart attack is fairly low in young and middle-aged women, little research has been conducted into the specifics of risk and prevention in this population. Smoking and oral contraceptive use are known to raise heart attack risk among young and middle-aged women, but the effect of diet is mostly unknown.

The current study was carried out on 93,600 women between the ages of 25 and 42 who were taking part in the Nurses’ Health Study II. Each participant completed a dietary questionnaire once every four years over the course of 18 years. During this time period, 405 heart attacks occurred among the participants.

The researchers found that women who ate the most strawberries and blueberries (three or more servings per week) had a 32 percent lower risk of heart attack than women who ate those berries once a month or less. This effect was true even after the researchers adjusted for other risk factors, including age, weight, exercise, family history of heart attack, high blood pressure, smoking, caffeine or alcohol intake, and even diet.

In other words, even among the sample of women that had a diet high in fruits and vegetables, women who ate the most strawberries and blueberries were still less likely to have a heart attack.

“We have shown that even at an early age, eating more of these fruits may reduce risk of a heart attack later in life,” lead author Aedin Cassidy said.

The power of anthocyanins

The study focused on blueberries and strawberries because they are the most common types of berries consumed in the United States. Berries are known to be high in naturally occurring plant chemicals known as flavonoids, specifically the group known as anthocyanins. Numerous studies have linked flavonoids to a number of health benefits, and anthocyanins in particular have been shown to help dilate arteries, prevent the buildup of arterial plaque, and provide other benefits to the cardiovascular system.

Other foods high in flavonoids include blackberries, cherries, black currants, grapes, red wine, eggplant, plums and raspberries.

Upon further analysis, the data seemed to suggest that a higher anthocyanin intake was associated with a lower risk of heart attack. This correlation was not found with other varieties of flavonoid.

“Growing evidence supports the beneficial effects of dietary flavonoids on endothelial function and blood pressure,” the researchers wrote, “suggesting that flavonoids might be more likely than other dietary factors to lower the risk of [coronary heart disease] in predominantly young women.”

(NaturalNews) The utter failure of the whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine to provide any real protection against disease is once again on display for the world to see, as yet another major outbreak of the condition has spread primarily throughout the vaccinated community. As it turns out, 90 percent of those affected by an ongoing whooping cough epidemic that was officially declared in the state of Vermont on December 13, 2012, were vaccinated against the condition — and some of these were vaccinated two or more times in accordance with official government recommendations.

As reported by the Burlington Free Press, at least 522 cases of whooping cough were confirmed by Vermont authorities last month, which was about 10 times the normal amount from previous years. Since that time, nearly 100 more cases have been confirmed, bringing the official total as of January 15, 2013, to 612 cases. The majority of those affected, according to Vermont state epidemiologist Patsy Kelso, are in the 10-14-year-old age group, and 90 percent of those confirmed have already been vaccinated one or more times for pertussis.

Even so, Kelso and others are still urging both adults and children to get a free pertussis shot at one of the free clinics set up throughout the state, insisting that both the vaccine and the Tdap booster for adults “are 80 to 90 percent effective.” Clearly this is not the case, as evidenced by the fact that those most affected in the outbreak have already been vaccinated, but officials are apparently hoping that the public is too naive or disengaged to notice this glaring disparity between what is being said and what is actually occurring.

A study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) tells a similar story, showing that among the various whooping cough outbreaks that have occurred across the country throughout the past few years, as many as 80 percent of those affected had already received multiple Tdap vaccinations, some up to six doses. What this implies, of course, is that not only is the Tdap vaccine medically useless, but it may also be the driving force behind the outbreaks themselves.

Besides potentially helping to spread the disease itself, the whooping cough vaccine is also implicated in causing serious side effects such as encephalitis, convulsions, and brain inflammation, according to an extensive report compiled by Heidi Stevenson over at Gaia Health. Dating back as far as 1933, the whooping cough vaccine has even been tied to causing sudden infant death syndrome, also known as crib or cot death, a condition in which a child suddenly dies for no apparent reason.

In a similar display of vaccine uselessness, another recent study, also published in NEJM, found that 97 percent of children affected by a 2009 mumps outbreak in New York had already been vaccinated for the condition. Embarrassingly, roughly 90 percent of those who contracted mumps in this particular outbreak had also received a mumps booster shot, further highlighting the fraud of this particular vaccine.
